Unboxing the Field Co. Cast Iron Skillet + New Cast Iron Tips

I’m always looking for some cast iron that is really well made like the old Griswold or Wagner stuff. But we recently opened up a new Field Company Skillet. I’m always hesitant about using new cast iron because a lot of times it isn’t milled to a smooth finish and can be heavy.

I’ll tell you, Shan and I were blown away by this new skillet. You can check out the video we’ve listed for all the points but here are some of our top favorites about this skillet:

  • Made in America. We wouldn’t want it any other way. American cast iron typically has a higher more pure quality which will heat more evenly and not warp.
  • It’s got a lifetime guarantee.
  • The price point was fair for American-made cast iron, running at $100 for this skillet, compared to $250 plus for other skillets.
  • It has a polished, smooth finish, just like the great vintage brands of cast iron.
  • It’s got good weight. More modern cast iron is heavy, but this is closer to the weight of the vintage iron. The handle was also comfortable.
  • It comes nicely preseasoned which makes it a great piece for someone new to cast iron. Typically I recommend sanding off a company’s pre-seasoning and starting over, but with this Field Company skillet it is ready to go right out of the box!

We put it to the test by frying up some good ol’ bacon in our video below. Watch the video for our full review…
