Cheesy Sourdough Onion Rings
Ingredients
- 1 large yellow onion cut into rings
- Sliced cheese we used Mozarella and Pepper Jack, cut into strips the width of the onion rings
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon ground mustard
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 4 tablespoons Red River Ranch Original https://kentrollins.com/shop-1/ or all-purpose seasoning of your choice, to taste
- 2 cups Sourdough starter link above
- 2 cups Panko bread crumbs
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Section out the rings of the onion, keeping them in pairs.
- Take two rings and place the cheese slices in between the two rings. Repeat with remaining rings/cheese. Cover and freeze for about 20 -30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, mix the flour, cornstarch, mustard, garlic, smoked paprika and Red River Ranch Original in a bowl.
- Dip the onion rings in the starter to coat thoroughly, then dredge through the flour mixture. Go back to coat in the starter and end by coating with the Panko crumbs.
- Place enough oil in a Dutch oven or skillet to deep fry the rings. Heat over medium-high heat to 350 degrees F. Fry each side for 2 – 3 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack. Serve warm.
