Upside Down Pizza
Sometimes the best suppers come from trying something new with what you already have. That is how this Upside Down Pizza came to be. Shannon and I were wanting something hearty, warm, and easy to throw together for supper, and instead of reaching for a frozen pizza, we decided to make one right in the cast iron skillet — only this time, turn it upside down.
We appreciate you sharing our recipes with your friends and family!
Now, before you start thinking that sounds strange, hear me out. This one starts with all your favorite toppings on the bottom — sausage, pepperoni, a few onions, and bell peppers for good measure. Once they get that nice sizzle in a cast iron skillet, we layer on the sauce.
I'm using a packed of spaghetti sauce mix because this meal is supposed to be an easy weeknight dinner. Fry up the toppings, top with sauce and cheese and crust, and get to eating quick and easy. You can use the marinara recipe from our Meatball Sub recipe if you want to make something homemade, or you can buy a premade jar of pizza sauce. There are no rules here!

Upside-Down Pizza Crust
Once the meat & peppers & onions are all cooked, cover over with the cheese, sour cream, and the crescent roll dough. Now, all thats left to do is the baking. It might look a little odd at first, but once it bakes, that dough rises right over everything, turning golden and soft while soaking in all that rich flavor underneath.
When it is done, flip that skillet over onto a plate, and what you have is a perfect pizza pie where the crust is on the bottom, the cheese stretches in the middle, and the toppings shine right on top.
It is the kind of meal that will make the whole kitchen smell like a pizzeria, and you can bet it will feed a hungry crew. Serve it up with a side salad or a few breadsticks if you like, but honestly, this pizza stands tall all on its own.
Tip: If you have a few leftovers, heat them back up in a skillet instead of the microwave. The crust stays crispy, and the cheese melts just right.
So next time you are thinking about pizza night, skip the delivery and try it the cowboy way — upside down and cooked in cast iron. You will not be sorry.
