Dutch Oven Shovel

If you’re going to be any Dutch oven cooking, this has got to be your go-to Dutch oven tool.
A shovel with holes in it!
Yep, I said it. Go ahead and get yourself a shovel and then drill holes in it.
When you’re cooking with live wood coals, or hardwood lump coals you have to sift the ash out before cooking with them. Ash doesn’t cook, it just insulates. So if you’ve got a bunch of ash on or around your oven, it’s going to take forever to cook… if it ever does.
When you go to grab a shovelful of coals, gently sift them so the ash falls out and you’ve got good hearty coals left.
Check out our trip to the local hardware store to get a new shovel….
