Cast Iron Gift Giving Guide

If y’all are looking to give or receive some cast iron this Christmas, we’ve got some tips and a general overview of some of the cast iron that we’ve used over the years.

As many of you have heard me say before, “Quality cast iron is an investment that will last your lifetime and will be something you can hand down through the generations.”

I always recommend buying American-made cast iron because you are ensuring that it is pure cast. There are several cast iron companies that are American-base but they import their iron. So, just be sure you do a little research before purchasing any cast iron.

The cast iron we are mentioning here are all American-made and a good quality iron. Each has their benefits and unique style. Some companies are also offering holiday promotions so be sure and check those out!

What’s great is there is cast iron for every different use and person- so find what works for you!

Field Company

Based in the Hudson River Valley, and was started by two brothers. It is a completely family-run operation which we really like! We have found their skillets to season up probably the best and quickest of all the skillets we use. They come with a slick pre-seasoning and ready to use out of the box.

The Field skillets are also lighter than many other skillets which makes cooking in them easier. They also just launched a new 12” size!

Note: Purchase by 12/13/18 for Christmas delivery!

What we love: Easy to season and they accept seasoning very well. A classic and simple design that is reminiscent of the old Griswold and Wagner Ware.

What it’s good for: Our go-to all-around skillet for everyday use.

Stargazer

This breaks the mold when it comes to skillet design. The most striking difference of the Stargazer skillets is their handle. They feature a longer and slightly wider handle that acts as a cooling feature. The skillets are also slightly deeper than traditional skillets which means they can hold more food.

Their skillets can be ordered unseasoned or pre-seasoned. Normally, we’d recommend ordering unseasoned, but they do a nice job and their pre-seasoning is slick and ready to use out of the box.

They are also taking pre-orders for a new 12″ skillet.

What we love: 15% military discount- always! Unique design that has a longer handle for cooler cooking.

What it’s good for: You can use this anywhere, but we like it particularly for outdoor cooking because of its longer handle it’s good for over the campfire cooking and has a sturdy design.

Promo: 15% military discount or code: JINGLE for 10% off.

Finex

These folks hail from the great state of Oregon! Finex, for us, is the luxury model of cast iron. You’ll also notice its unique design. Honestly, when we first saw these skillets we thought they were odd looking, but after cooking in them they have become some of our favorites.

These skillets have a thick wall, which does create more weight, but it’s great for holding in heat and searing. They also offer cast iron lids which we end up using a lot. The spiral handle creates a no heat design… really, no heat. When cooking (not in the oven) the handle doesn’t get hot which saves on burnt fingers!

Finex is among the most expensive, but if you’re looking fora special occasion gift, for the person who has everything or the cast iron collector this is highly recommended. Look into their 8” for a more affordable option.

What we love: The cool handle design and cast iron lid.

What it’s good for:While it’s great for all types of cooking a cool feature is to use it as a warming tray. The thick-walled design, coupled with the lid, will keep food warm while you finish preparing the meal.

Lodge

Lodge has been around a long time and it is one of the most readily available brands. Most outdoor stores, general stores and even major retailers like Walmart, carry the brand. It is an affordable option being among the least expensive American-made cast iron brands.

Lodge features a sturdy design that is good for indoor and outdoor cooking. Lodge comes pre-seasoned, however we do recommend removing their pre-seasoning before cooking in it because it can cause sticking and food to taste metallic. You can see how we remove the seasoning here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljSQrSoSYAE

Lodge also offers a variety of products including griddles, enameled cast iron and Dutch ovens. In fact, the thing we like most about Lodge is they are the only company making American-made outdoor Dutch ovens and those are the only ones we use!

What we love: A wide variety of products including their Dutch ovens!

What it’s good for: Folks looking in to get cast iron for an affordable price.

Promo: When you sign up for their email newsletter you’ll receive 15% off.
