Make Ahead Christmas Morning Breakfast

Start by cutting up a loaf of French bread into cubes. You do not want them toasted. You only want them dried out a little so they will soak up all the good flavors you are going to pour over them. Spread the cubes in a hot skillet or a warm oven until they lose their moisture.

Tip: For more Tip: Drying the bread keeps your casserole from turning soggy.

Melt good butter in a pot. If there was ever a time to use the good stuff, it is Christmas morning. Stir in white sugar and brown sugar until everything melts together into a smooth sauce. Pour that mixture into the bottom of your baking pan and press the dried bread cubes down into it so they can soak up every bit of it.

Tip: Pressing the bread into the caramel mixture helps form a flavorful crust on the bottom.

Next, whisk together eggs, a rich dairy liquid like half and half or cream, some sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. If you enjoy a little holiday note of whiskey, add a splash. The alcohol cooks out and leaves a warm flavor. Apple juice works fine if you prefer. Pour this mixture evenly over the bread.

Bake until the top is lightly brown and the custard has set. When it comes out of the oven, sprinkle on some berries, chopped nuts, or a dusting of powdered sugar that looks like a Christmas snowfall.

Tip: Add an extra sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg on top before baking for a stronger holiday aroma.

This casserole tastes like Christmas in a dish. It is simple, comforting, and perfect for feeding a whole crowd without flipping one slice of toast at a time. Serve it warm and watch everyone come running from the living room straight to the table.
