Best of the West – Cowboy and Indians Magazine

Each spring and fall we host our popular Chuck Wagon Cooking Schools. Currently we offer two types of sessions: an overnight camping experience and day clinics. For more opportunities please also check our upcoming events page HERE.

Day Clinics

Enjoy a day at the chuck wagon in this cooking clinic. The day will be spent learning the basics of cooking with Dutch ovens with wood coals. We will cover a variety of baked dishes and you won’t go home hungry! The day will tentatively begin at 9 am and conclude around 6 pm. Overnight stay is not included. All food, cooking items, etc. will be provided.

Locations typically at State Parks in the Southwestern Oklahoma and Northern Texas Area.

Current pricing: $350/person

Overnight Camp Cooking Sessions

This experience is a 2 day, 3 night session. Students will arrive to a scene from an old cow camp at a ranch setting. All food is cooked at the wagon with Dutch ovens and hardwood. We cover the basics of Dutch oven cooking to include: breads, cakes, pies, casseroles, meat dishes, etc. We teach temperature control, coal placement and other fundamental Dutch oven techniques for hardwood cooking.

We will all join together for an evening supper on the beginning date. Lessons will begin the following morning for two days. We’ll break camp roughly by 10 am on the final day.

Locations typically include ranches in the Southwest Oklahoma and North Texas areas.

Current cost: $1,500/single $2,700/couple (shares a teepee)
